Force Majeure
Ruben Östlund watches a Swedish man instinctively abandon his family during an avalanche and spend the rest of the ski vacation trying to reconstruct himself in front of the very people who watched him run.

What it is about
A family ski holiday unravels after a father's response to an avalanche unsettles his wife.
Five seconds that fracture a family
Tomas grabs his phone and runs when the avalanche rolls toward the restaurant terrace. He leaves Ebba and the children behind. The rest of the film watches him try to negotiate reality back to a version where that did not happen.
Östlund shoots in long, still wide shots. The camera watches the family the way a naturalist watches a species under stress. Social discomfort accumulates in the silence until it becomes almost unbearable to sit with.
The real betrayal is not the cowardice itself but the lying that follows. Ebba is not asking Tomas to have been a hero. She is asking him to be honest about who he was for five seconds on a ski slope, and he cannot do it.
